Rufus and First Incursion

"Damn," I swore. I looked at my watch. Time was nearly out. I snapped myself down to Rufus, who came barreling towards me. I read an apology in his eyes for not being able to stay longer. "It's okay, boy," I said, petting him gently. "You've been a good guard dog."

He licked my face one last time before bounding off. I could see that he had his own abilities, because he vanished in a puff of red smoke like so many things around here did. He had a way with wordless communication that made me miss having any male company. So far, I'd gotten a harem of chicks, which was awesome, don't get me wrong. And I'd spent way too many years of my life when the only places I went beside work and home were sausage parties. But I missed having male companionship.

I dug around and looked for another quest. I didn't understand why another one hadn't appeared yet. Rufus was gone, so the PvP...

Oh shit. My stomach sank. Rufus running home meant that my Guardians were the only line of defense between me and the other players who had started at the same time as me. As soon as they marshaled their forces, they'd be on my doorstop, trying to take my fortress and women. I wasn't about to let that happen. I snapped myself back to the security room. I set all of our sensors on the highest alert levels, so a leaf blown around by the breeze would trigger them. I didn't know if people had started at exactly the same time as me, but I wasn't going to let myself hang around like a bleeding fish darting in front of a Great White. I heard my middle school basketball coach tell me that the best defense was a good offense, but I shook my head. He was the dad of the bully of my nightmares. As a kid, I'd been petrified of Ricky, but as an adult, I wondered what kind of fucked up home life he'd had that made him take it out on his classmates. He'd eventually ended up in juvie and never came back to school after he torched his ex-girlfriend's car the day that she broke up with him.

I shook off this weird wave of sympathy for an asshole I tried not to remember. The lesson was beaten into me. I was not waiting for someone to knock on my door. I could be the one knocking on other people's doors. I didn't have the manpower or womanpower or whatever you wanted to call it to fully defend my caput and attack anybody else. I was going to have to make a choice: I could sit in my fortress like a scared little girl or I could go and extend my domain by capturing other players' caputs. I didn't have the womanpower I needed right now but that was a temporary problem because I could get some more.

"Amber," I called, snapping my fingers.
